Advice for Australians Living or Visiting Long-Term in Lebanon
September 2007
The Australian Government – including through the Australian Embassy in Beirut(**1) – works hard to help Australians in Lebanon. During the 2006 conflict, we helped many Australians to leave Lebanon safely.
Security in Lebanon remains unpredictable and the situation may suddenly become unsafe again for Australians.
The Australian Embassy and the Australian Government may be limited in what it can do to help you in a crisis.(**2) So you need to be prepared. If you are an Australian living in Lebanon or visiting Lebanon for a long period, the following simple steps will help you.
-
Make sure your Australian passport is current. Australians can get a valid Australian passport through the Australian Embassy. Make sure you know where your valid Australian passport is. Keep it in a safe place. And write down your passport number in a different place from your passport.
- Give your contact details in Lebanon to the Australian Embassy. You can give your address, phone numbers, e-mail address at www.smartraveller.gov.au or by contacting the Australian Embassy. Otherwise, get your close family or friends to give your details at www.smartraveller.gov.au. If your details change, let the Embassy know.
-
Have a practical plan to get yourself safely out of Lebanon, if you had to leave at short notice. As part of your plan, make sure you have enough cash and have organised other travel needs, such as visas for your dependents, well in advance. Tell your close family or friends in Australia about your plan.
-
Read the travel advice(**3) for Australians. The current travel advice says “reconsider your need to travel” to Lebanon. It also says “do not travel” to areas south of the Litani River, to the Bekaa Valley, to Mount Lebanon, to the Tripoli area or to Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Please note: This advice applies equally to Australians living in Lebanon and those travelling to Lebanon for short visits.
If you have close family or friends who are Australians living in Lebanon or Australians visiting Lebanon for a long period, please pass this advice to them.
