Dear fellow Australians
With many Australians visiting Lebanon at present, I want to remind you about some important preparations you should take to make your time here as safe and trouble free as possible.
Up to 30,000 Australians live in or visit Lebanon annually, and each year my consular team help over 300 Australians who find themselves in trouble, due to problems with ill-health, the law, family or commercial disputes. And as you know, the political and security situation in Lebanon remains unpredictable.
While we do our best to assist, there are legal and practical limits to what we can do for travellers overseas and Australians need to have realistic expectations.
There are some simple steps you can take that will help you be better prepared:
• Take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover health and personal effects;
• Register your travel and contact details with the Embassy;
• Inform yourself about Lebanon’s security situation, local laws, dual nationality restrictions and entry and exit requirements by subscribing to the Lebanon travel advice. For more information go to www.smartraveller.gov.au.
• Ensure your passports are kept up-to-date and in a safe location
• Obey the law.
Remember, we cannot:
• give legal advice, investigate crimes or intervene in court proceedings
• get Australians out of prison or obtain special treatment for Australians in prison
• obtain medical services or medications
• pay or guarantee payment of hotel, medical or any other bills;
• • become involved in family or commercial disputes.
It is the responsibility of every Australian to be fully informed and prepared for travel. I strongly encourage you read our travel advice, take out travel insurance, and register your contact details with us.
With these simple precautions, Australians in Lebanon will feel more able to enjoy Lebanon and all it has to offer during their stay here.
With best wishes
Jean Dunn
